If I were pressed slightly, I would say this was Johnny Mathis'' best album. It''s a hard thing to say, because so many others are absolutely brilliant as well. This one I call the greatest because it perfectly encapsulates the smooth R&B/Jazz sound of its time, which is also quite pop friendly. I could imagine any of these songs being on the radio at the time, and doing well. The musicianship is top notch, and Johnny''s voice is a force to be reckoned with. It''s happy, upbeat, and even the slow songs are so smooth and bright it can''t help but lift up your day. This is one of few albums in my life which I leave my normally shuffled playlist to listen to specifically. This has everything an album should be, the way its theme continues from front to back. It''s fluid and flowing and soulful and smooth and I can''t recommend it enough.

First off, Johnny Mathis is tied with Smokey Robinson, on my list of my favorite artists of all time. Being a college student, I''m probably the most unlikely of his fan base since he began his career "quite a while" before my time but that''s how much of an INCREDIBLE LEGEND and PERSON he is. When I heard that this album would be available this past January, I was super-exited and anticipated the wait. January hit and I made sure to be one of the first customers to buy the 2000 limited edition. My only complaint is the album cover. The picture makes Johnny look mean and does not showcase the kindness and gentleness of this strikingly handsome man.

My FAVORITE Songs:

1.) Simple- Two words. RIDUCULOUSLY FANTASTIC. This song reached #6 on Billboard''s Adult Contemporary charts but it should have been #1 on AC, Pop, and R&B charts. I love the jazzy, doo-wop, feel of the drums, piano, horns music (The saxophone parts are my fav.)and of course John shows a softer, soulful side of his voice that makes it a definite finger-snapper. It reminds me of legendary R&B group, The Whispers'' song "Just Gets Better With Time". The VOCAL version has the typical 80s " boingy" sound but I love the original version the best. The INSTRUMENTAL version is awesome as well, especially listening to the chemistry of the instrumental parts.

2.) "Love Won''t Let Me Wait (w/ Deniece Williams)- If you''ve ever heard of the "Quiet Storm" portions that''s played on most national R&B radio stations, this is one of the songs that DEFINES that genre. I''m SO DISAPPOINTED that this song is not a more well known song. Deniece Williams is a legend in her own right and she worked with Johnny before with the super hit "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" in 1977 and their duet album "That''s What Friends Are For" the next year. BUT THIS SONG, a remake of Major Harris'' song, perfect 80s slow jam, perfect chemistry between Johnny and Deniece.

3.) "You''re a Special Part of Me" (W/ Angela Bofill)- The title song of the album is a fantastic duet with Johnny and Angela. It''s in constant rotation on my iPod. This smooth groove with a Latin bite is another 80s finger snapper or stepping song with Angela''s backgrounds ab-libs adding a colorful exchange. Johnny''s voice is stellar and shows a fun side to his personality.

4.)"Love Never Felt So Good"- This underrated song was written by none other than the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The thought that Michael and Johnny even collaborated in the first place builds excitement. It''s a fun, fast paced, playful song that is uncharacteristically Johnny but will be a nice surprise to the listener''s ears.

5.)"Priceless"- I LOOOOVE this song. This smooth slow jam was written by Leon Ware, famous for collaborating with legends such as Marvin Gaye. Anyway, Johnny ''s voice is spectacular and I love when he uses his higher register during the chorus.

6.)"Right Here and Now"- I LOOOOOVE this song too. It''s a great tune with the perfect mix of a smooth ballad and speeding up to snazzy, island-like mid tempo rhythm during the chorus. John''s showcases his whole range, from his rumbling baritone to his soaring tenor. My brother thinks it sounds like a corny 80s TV theme song but I love it just the same. It always puts me in a great mood.

A mixed genre of songs sung by the versatile voice of Mr. Mathis. "One Love" is my favorite in his emotive style. Especially enjoy the cover as JM always looks superb in a white suit.

Johnny Mathis is a class act. He has survived 7 decades in the music industry. Over that time Johnny has absorbed the various shifts in tastes and navigated the changes in how pop music has developed. This album from the mid 80s finds Johnny embracing the sophisticated sweet soul, R&B sounds of the period sounding fresh and relevant. The material is perfectly suited to Johnny''s voice giving him a UK hit with the track "Simple" which was played to death on UK radio at the time. The arrangements still sound great listening over 35 years later. Great album
